Janicka Iwona
Iwona Janicka (Ph.D), Assistant Professor at the Department of Modern History since 2005. Her doctoral dissertation (2004) was written under the supervision of Professor Zbigniew Opacki. Her research interests include: history of medicine, social history, material culture as well as everyday life in the modern era and in the nineteenth century. Geographically, her research focuses on the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania, with particular emphasis on the northwestern provinces of the Russian Empire in the 19th century. She studies the hygienic culture of cities, the living conditions of the population, the history of the cholera epidemic, the history of public health in Russia, the shaping of the medical community and medical education of female doctors, as well as the traditional medicine. Dr. Janicka looks into various aspects of daily lives – from the history of hygiene, culinary culture, social life of the city elite to historical experiences of students of the Vilnius University.
Participant of many national and international conferences, she received four Rector’s Awards of the 2nd degree, and in 2015 a grant from the National Science Center for research on cholera epidemics in the North-Western governorates of Russia in the 19th century. She is the author and editor of over 70 publications. In 2017, her book “Kultura higieniczna Wilna w latach 1795-1915” [Hygienic Culture of Vilnius in 1795-1915] became a basis for preparing a part of the exhibition “Miesto gamta preadedant Vilniumi” at the Lithuanian National Museum in Vilnius. In addition to scientific achievements, she has authored many didactic materials (in history and civic education classes) for all levers of schools in Poland.
Dr. Janicka among many administrative functions, was the Faculty Coordinator of the Baltic Science Festival, coordinator of the Sightseeing and Historical Tourism (KiTH)– a study major offered by the Faculty of History, and the coordinator of the Powiśle Science Festival.
Currently, she is the chairman of the District Committee of the “Historical Olympics,” – a competition for high school students. She is a treasurer of the Gdańsk branch of the Polish Historical Association (PTH), member of the Library Council, KiTH curriculum planning council, member of the Baltic Institute, PTH and a member of the editorial boards of the periodicals "Studia Historica Gedanensia" and "Gdańskie Teki Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze"
