Department of Medieval History and Auxiliary Sciences of History

The Department of Medieval History and Auxiliary Sciences of History

The Department of Medieval History and Auxiliary Sciences of History was established in 1997. For over twenty years it was chaired by Professor of History – Błażej Śliwiński (prof. dr hab.). The academics who currently constitute the scientific core of the Department as full professors began their careers as students of Professor Śliwiński; prof. dr hab. Beata Możejko (with the Department since 1997), prof. dr hab. Sobiesław Szybkowski (since 1999) and Associate Professor Marek Smoliński (dr hab., prof. UG) who took over as Department’s Chair

upon retirement of Professor Śliwinski in 2019. The same year the Department was strengthened by hiring of Dr. Julia Możdżeń (graduate of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, a student of prof. Roman Czaja).

The shared research interests of the scholars working within the Department focus on the history of medieval Poland, Pomerania, Hanseatic networks, medieval towns and bourgeoisie, genealogy, prosopography of kings and nobility, and the history of knightly orders in the lands of contemporary Poland.

The research output by the Department members and their scientific achievements include over thirty books and a large number of articles published in Polish and foreign academic journals. The Department publishes a scientific journal that exists since 1994 „Studia z Dziejów Średniowiecza” [Studies in Medieval History] (previously called: „Gdańskie Studia z Dziejów Średniowiecza”).
