The Department of History of Medieval Art in the Institute of History of Art is chaired by Assoc. Prof., dr hab. Mirosław Kruk. Professor Kruk is supported by two scholars: Dr. Katarzyna Płonka Bałus and Assoc. Prof., dr hab. Andrzej Woziński. Our scope of interest and research includes medieval art of Eastern and Western Europe, especially panel painting and sculpture of the Baltic region (A. Woziński), panel painting and illuminated codices of the Netherlands (K. Płonka Bałus), and Byzantine and Russian art (M. Kruk). Apart from our research we put particular emphasis on education, drawing on experience from various academic centers and from museum work, bringing attributes of selected masterpieces, artistic phenomena and periods in art history closer to our students, taking into account historical and cultural contexts, research methods and techniques, and at the same time forming and advancing methodological thinking. We collaborate in developing exhibition ideas and catalogues, we prepare monographs, monographic articles, lexicographical entries, as well as catalogues of collections, systematically presenting our research results at national and international conferences.
