History

History - the queen of humanities

History is a classic and invariably popular humanistic course in Pomerania, taught since the foundation of the University of Gdańsk. This course provides comprehensive humanistic education and good basis for working in many institutions related to history education or gathering knowledge about the past. Through lectures and practical classes students receive extensive and diverse knowledge of the history of Poland and the world, learn the techniques and tools used by historians, as well as acquire skills useful in their future career.

There are scientific societies working in the Institute of History at the University of Gdańsk where many student conferences and scientific trips are organised. As a part of Erasmus exchange scheme, students have a chance to attend classes at foreign universities in Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Belgium, Romania, Hungary and Latvia. Student internship in numerous Pomeranian schools and public institutions enables students to gain useful skills and priceless professional experience. Modern teaching facilities and highly-qualified academic workers ensure a comfortable learning environment. Our graduates find employment as politicians, members of local governments, scientists, tour guides, entrepreneurs, clerks, journalists, teachers, librarians or archivists.

The History course at the University of Gdańsk is available in the form of both BA and MA studies. During the BA studies, the student obtains systematised and cross-sectional knowledge of Polish history as well as the history of the world from the antiquity to the modern times. The student acquaints oneself with the basics of a historian's workshop, available information technologies and, during seminars, learns how to properly and efficiently write a thesis and use historical sources. There are three specialisations which can be pursued during the BA studies:

• teaching - prepares students to become teachers (completed BA studies qualify for teaching in primary schools)
• archiving - trains future archivists
• regional education - designed for people of 50 years and over who wish to develop their passion for history

During the MA studies, students expand their expertise by getting acquainted with the methodology of historical research, historiography and, through translation classes, foreign specialist vocabulary, among others. There are two specialisations which can be pursued during the MA studies:

• teaching - enables student to extend their knowledge and skills of teaching history and civics. The MA students specialising themselves in teaching are qualified to work as teachers of history and civics in junior high schools and high schools. This specialisation is available only to those students who have chosen the teaching specialisation during the BA studies (regardless of the course).
• modern museum – prepares the students to work in state-of-the-art museum.
