Historical Tourism
Unique studies for future tour operators
Historical Tourism is a unique course combining elements of historical, natural and economic sciences. It provides extensive knowledge and interdisciplinary skills. On one hand, students acquire knowledge of history, history of art, archaeology and geography (that is, knowledge related to cultural heritage). On the other hand, the course provides expertise in the field of economics and administration. The aim is for the graduate to be prepared for working as a tour operator, a promoter or a guide.
There are scientific societies working in the Institute of History at the University of Gdańsk where many student conferences and scientific trips are organised. As a part of Erasmus exchange scheme, students have a chance to attend classes in foreign universities in Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Belgium, Romania, Hungary and Latvia. Student internship in numerous Pomeranian schools and public institutions enables students to gain useful skills and priceless professional experience. Modern teaching facilities and highly-qualified academic workers ensure a comfortable learning environment. Our graduates find employment as politicians, members of local governments, scientists, tour guides, entrepreneurs, clerks, journalists, teachers, librarians or archivists.
Historic Tourism at the University of Gdańsk is available in the form of both BA and MA studies. During the BA studies, the student obtains systematised and cross-sectional knowledge of the history of civilisation from the antiquity to the modern times as well as notions related to art, culture and urban geography. Students acquire basic knowledge of law, tourism management, history and tourism geography of the world. The University of Gdańsk applies so called location-based games as an innovative teaching method prepared by professional tourist guides and academic teachers. During internships students have a chance to gain experience in tourist movement management and organisation of tourist events in multiple travel agencies and institutions with which the Institute of History signed agreements.
The curriculum of the MA studies adopts the geographical criterion. The programme aims at acquainting students with history and culture of such regions as Scandinavia, East-Central Europe, Russia, Middle East and selected countries of the Western Europe, e.g. France and Italy, well-known for their tourist attractiveness. There is a strong emphasis on the subjects related to natural sciences and those providing knowledge of tourist organisation management. The curriculum is complemented with English, Arabic or Hebrew language course (one of the three) and apprenticeship.
